Australia Day Brogo Style
Category: RedgumSome communities celebrate Australia Day in unusual ways. Brogo is one of these communities.
Brogo is reknowned for its unusual mix of people.
We choose different methods of living and celebrating than most other people. None more so than the annual Australia Day Lilo Float down the Brogo River.
This event began with Dan Brophy, who has now sadly passed away. Brogarians gather and either travel all the way from Brogo Dam to the bridge just near the Princes Highway, or begin their journey halfway down either from Dave's place or Dallas and Dan's place.
Any craft is welcome and in the past there have been efforts made on tractor and car inner tubes, surfboards, boogie boards, kayaks, lilos (ie blow up air mattress) and the like.
This year we've had good rain and since there was plenty of water flowing in the river, it made for a faster journey with less injuries.
I made my first journey last year and used a boogie board but since there hadn't been a great deal of rain during the preceding months, there were stretches of river that didn't have a lot of water flow. For the uninitiated, this means scraped feet and knees if you're using a boogie board as your preferred water craft.
It goes without saying that the final part of the proceedings is a BBQ and a few drinks to help wash the food down.
